Issues

Roots of Change works to address, simultaneously, the four most pressing issues related to healthy food and agriculture in California: healthy food access, environmental stewardship, valued workforce, and economic prosperity. We collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders from the nonprofit, for-profit, and public sectors to implement transformative action that will result in abundant, safe, healthy, fresh, and affordable food for everyone now and in the future.

Food and agriculture are a foundation of California’s economy and will continue to fuel its future. It is imperative that farmers, ranchers, and entrepreneurs remain profitable and continue to invest in the improvement of their enterprises. Roots of Change advocates for more and creative investment, intelligent regulation, and continuing market development to maintain the economic vitality of our food and agriculture businesses.

California’s rich and diverse soils, vast farm and ranch lands, climate, air, water, and native species must be protected and in many cases restored so that future generations can enjoy the same quality of life that we have. ROC believes that among several other key dynamics, the food system will not be sustainable until agriculture greatly reduce and/or eliminates its huge impacts on climate, air and water pollution. Roots of Change joins with farmers and ranchers, nonprofit organizations, public officials, entrepreneurs, and concerned citizens to ensure that stewardship incentives exist, that vital environmental research is funded, and that the knowledge gained is shared.

Healthy food is food that is fresh, safe, and comes from farms that are fair to the workers who produce it and is affordable and accessible to those who eat it. Healthy food is a right to all people, no matter their location or level of prosperity. Roots of Change works with a variety of nonprofit and business partners to expand the amount of healthy food available to low-income communities in both urban and rural parts of California.

The farm and food workers who feed us bear the heaviest burden of all workers in California and receive the least rewards. They are often left out of the conversation about California’s food system. Creating equity for workers in a global economy may be our biggest challenge. ROC supports farmers, farmers’ advocates, and their efforts to provide career opportunities, increased safety, fair compensation, and legal status to work in the U.S. This is good both for workers and for the farmers and ranchers who employ them.
